National Education Association Conference in Denver, CO*

During the week of July 6th-13th, 4 of our members participated in numerous professional growth opportunities in Denver, Colorado. These opportunities included sessions on teaching strategies and NEA membership benefits. Participants also atteneded the PA Caucus where they participate in discussions on the laws and rules for NEA.

In September, 7 members of our leadership team attended an Executive Board Retreat through the West Chester University Student Leadership Council. At this retreat, members met with approximately 20 other executive boards from organizations across campus. Members discussed their individual roles in the organization as well as how they can better their respective organization through their individual leadership strengths. Participants left eager to motivate new and returning members in their organizations.

Southern Region Conference*

The Southern Region Conference was held at Millersville University in Lancaster, PA. The 9 attendees learned about differentiated instruction, literacy techniques, student centered learning, leadership roles, as well as what to include on a professional resume. The conference was extremely beneficial to all who participated.

Teacher of the Year Presentation

Executive Board Retreat

In April of 2014, Student PSEA and the WCU Alumni Association hosted the Teacher of the Year in the State of Pennsylvania, Ryan Devlin. Ryan spoke about his educational journey and how to become teacher of the year. He did a fun presentation with media references including Lord of the Rings and The Muppets.

Southeast Region Conference: Safety in Schools*

The Southeast Region Conference was held on Saturday, November 8th, 2014 at West Chester University. The event was organized by PSEA member Amanda Nestler. 

TED Talks at General Meetings

At our general meetings, we showed TED Talks in order to provide a monthly opportunity for members to engage in professional growth. The TED talks included What Teachers Make, Every Kid Needs a Champion, and The Key to Success? Grit. Afterwards, we discussed the TED talks as a large group including how we can apply the subject matter to our classrooms.

Fall 2014 Professional Development Series*

The Fall Professional Development Series included a panel of Alumni from the WCU College of Education and a Resume and Interview Preparation Session at the Twardowski Career Center on campus. These events promoted Student PSEA by providing valuable professional growth opportunities.

Special Education Seminar with Dr. Reed

In March, the EGP SIG hosted Dr. Melissa Reed to speak upon current issues in Special Education. 14 of our members attended this professional development experience hosted at Earl F. Sykes Theater on the West Chester University Campus.

Slam Poetry Event

On November 24th, Alpha Upsilon Alpha held a slam poetry event where participants and attendees engaged in a 'slam.' A slam resonates with individuals from diverse backgrounds because the focus on political, social, racial, economic, and gender issues. Five SPSEA members attended the slam.

Leadership Experience at West Chester University

The Leadership Experience at West Chester University was an opportunity for our executive board members and SIG chairs to learn more about their leadership roles and how they can use those roles to imporve each individual organization. Student PSEA had 12 members in attendance. Antonio Neves, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, presented an inspirational keynote to open the conference.

ELL Panel

On March 26th, 2015, Student PSEA hosted a professional development opportunity with Professor DellaValle, a middle school ESL teacher at Upper Merion School District. Prof. DellaValle is brought 6 students and some of their parents to our school for a panel discussion. These students were from Peru, Burma, Mexico, Egypt, Albania, China and more! They are students who are in middle and high school spoke on thier many experiences as English Language Learners in the general education classroom. It was be a wonderful and informational session where you can learn more about English Language Learners and how we can support them in the classroom.

Professional Growth

On April 4-5, 2014, 25 of our members attended the State PSEA Conference in Erie, Pennsylvania which provided numerous professional growth opportunities for all members in attendance.
