Southeast Region Conference*

Safety in Schools

West Chester University

On Saturday, November 8th, 2014, 126 students from West Chester University and Holy Family University visited the Earl F. Sykes building to learn more about Safety in Schools. The day featured a Chris Clayton, the assistant director of educational services of PSEA, as the keynote speaker. Chris discussed how to establish a safe and open environment in our schools, as well as the servant-leadership model. The conference continued with 14 breakout sessions including School Law, Pre-event Indicators of an Active Shooter, Multicultural Competence 101, and What Every Teacher Needs to Know about Mandatory Reporting among other sessions.

At lunch, members participated in the NEA campaign, Degrees not Debt. Degrees not Debt asks Congress to enhance federal loan forgiveness for those entering fields of public service, including teachers as well as increasing need-based financial aid and financial aid to minority serving institutions.

Conference participants also joined the Global Chalk Campaign which was launched by the Central Asia Institute The Global Chalk Campaign serves to remind everyone why education matters and why it must be a right for every child. The campaign asks the question, "why should education be a right for every child, rather than a privilege?" Members  answered this question as you can see here.

The afternoon continued with additional breakout sessions and finally, a raffle for an iPad mini.
